UGC briefing: how to get good videos.

Most weak UGC videos fail because of the brief. It’s rarely the creator. If all you write is “show the product”, you get a video that looks exactly like that.

One goal per video

Should the video make new people curious or convince people who are on the fence? Doing both in one rarely works.

Three hooks to choose from

The first two seconds decide whether someone keeps watching. Give three different openings and have all of them recorded. Then test in your ads which one performs best.

The one line that should stick

What should someone know about your product after the video? One sentence, not five.

What needs to be in the shot

  • The product in the hand or on the body, not just on a table.
  • A close-up that shows the effect: shine, texture, how it sits.
  • The unboxing, if your packaging is worth showing.

What to leave out

Finished ad lines to read out. People notice right away when someone is reciting a script. Give bullet points, not scripts.

Setup

  • Vertical, 9:16.
  • Daylight, ideally by a window.
  • Record sound without music. Music is added in the edit.
  • Several short takes instead of one long one.
